Right-handed pitcher Justin Verlander and the Detroit Tigers are in agreement on a one-year contract, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN. The deal brings the future Hall of Famer back to the organization where he spent the first 13 seasons of his career.
Justin Verlander, who turns 43 next week, remains one of the most decorated active pitchers in Major League Baseball. During his initial tenure with the Detroit Tigers from 2005 to 2017, he earned the 2006 AL Rookie of the Year award, the 2011 AL MVP, and the 2011 AL Cy Young Award. He was the cornerstone of the rotation during the franchise's run to two World Series appearances in 2006 and 2012.
Per @JeffPassan, the veteran right-hander is widely expected to wear a Tigers hat when he is eventually inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. After successful stints with the Houston Astros and New York Mets—where he added two more World Series titles and two additional Cy Young awards to his resume—Verlander returns to Detroit to bolster the team's starting rotation for the upcoming season.
