The Philadelphia Phillies have fired manager Rob Thomson, according to sources who spoke with ESPN. In a corresponding move, the organization has appointed Don Mattingly to serve as the team's interim manager. Matt Gelb of The Athletic was the first to report the news of the coaching change.
Rob Thomson was named the manager of the Phillies during the 2022 season after previously serving as the team's bench coach. During his tenure, he led the franchise to a World Series appearance and multiple postseason runs. Despite that success, the organization has decided to move in a different direction effective immediately.
Don Mattingly, who joins the interim role, brings a wealth of managerial experience to the position. Mattingly previously served as the manager for both the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Miami Marlins before joining the Phillies' staff. He will now be tasked with leading the clubhouse through this transition period as the team continues its current campaign.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
