In a high-stakes divisional battle that required extra frames to decide, the Cleveland Guardians vs Detroit Tigers matchup on Wednesday night lived up to the billing. Behind clutch hitting in the 10th inning and a masterful performance on the mound from Tanner Bibee, Cleveland secured a hard-fought 3-2 victory at Comerica Park. The win continues a hot streak for the Guardians, while the Tigers find themselves deeper in a mid-season slump that has seen them lose five consecutive games.
Angel Martínez and José Ramírez Deliver in the 10th
The game remained deadlocked heading into the 10th inning, but the Guardians’ offense finally broke through against Detroit reliever Tyler Holton. With automatic runner Brayan Rocchio stationed at second base, Angel Martínez stepped to the plate and delivered the biggest hit of the night. Martínez lined a triple deep into the gap, easily scoring Rocchio to give Cleveland a 2-1 lead.
The Guardians weren't finished yet. All-Star third baseman José Ramírez followed Martínez’s heroics with a sharp RBI double to center field, driving in Martínez and providing what proved to be a crucial insurance run. The two-run outburst in the top of the 10th shifted the pressure entirely onto the Tigers, who have struggled to find consistent offense over the last two weeks.
Tanner Bibee Breaks the Curse with Dominant Outing
While the late-inning bats will get the headlines, the story for much of the night was the resurgence of Tanner Bibee. Entering the game, the Guardians had remarkably dropped nine consecutive games in which Bibee had started. On Wednesday, the right-hander looked determined to end that streak.
Bibee was nearly untouchable through eight innings, surrendering just four hits and striking out five. He maintained a 1-0 lead for much of the game after Cleveland’s defense and pitching staff navigated several early threats. Bibee’s efficiency allowed him to go deep into the contest, providing much-needed rest for the bullpen before the high-leverage situations in the 9th and 10th. Although he didn't factor into the decision, his performance was the foundation of the Cleveland Guardians vs Detroit Tigers victory.
Missed Opportunities for Detroit
The Tigers had their chances to walk away with a win, particularly in the bottom of the ninth. With the game tied 1-1, Detroit put runners on first and second with no outs. However, the Guardians’ relief duo of Erik Sabrowski and Colin Holderman slammed the door. Holderman, who earned the win (2-0), combined with Sabrowski to record three consecutive strikeouts, leaving the Tigers’ runners stranded and sending the game to extras.
The Ninth Inning Comeback
Cleveland’s path to victory required a late-inning rally just to reach the 10th. Facing a 1-0 deficit in the top of the ninth, Daniel Schneemann ignited the offense with a leadoff single against Will Vest. The Guardians utilized small ball to perfection, as Travis Bazzana followed with a single and Steven Kwan moved the runners over with a textbook sacrifice bunt.
With the tying run just 90 feet away, Patrick Bailey hit a productive groundout that allowed Schneemann to cross the plate, evening the score at 1-1. It was a gritty display of situational hitting that has become a hallmark of this Cleveland roster during their recent surge, where they have won eight of their last nine games.
Tigers' Slump Continues Amidst Pitching Milestones
For the Detroit Tigers, the loss is another chapter in a difficult stretch. Detroit has now lost 13 of its last 15 games, a slide that has seen them fall further back in the AL Central standings. Despite the loss, there was a bright spot in the performance of starter Drew Anderson. Making his first big league start since 2021, Anderson was spectacular, racking up a career-high seven strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings while allowing only two hits.
The Tigers attempted a comeback in the bottom of the 10th when Zach McKinstry drove in Wenceel Pérez with an RBI single to cut the lead to 3-2. However, Guardians closer Cade Smith remained composed, retiring the next three batters to secure his 16th save of the season.
The series concludes on Thursday afternoon as the Guardians look for the sweep. Cleveland will send left-hander Joey Cantillo (3-1, 3.40 ERA) to the mound, while Detroit counters with right-hander Casey Mize (2-2, 2.43 ERA).
