Ketel Marte Hits Dramatic 9th-Inning Home Run to Lift Diamondbacks Over Giants

In a season defined by resilience, the Arizona Diamondbacks may have just found their most defining moment yet. Down to their final out and trailing by two runs in the ninth inning, the D-backs staged a stunning rally at Chase Field on Tuesday night, capped off by a Ketel Marte game-winning home run that sent the home crowd into a frenzy and secured a 5-3 victory over the San Francisco Giants.

The Ninth Inning Magic

For eight innings, it appeared the San Francisco Giants were destined to even the series. Holding a 3-1 lead, the Giants' bullpen had been nearly flawless, inducing critical double plays in both the seventh and eighth innings to snuff out Arizona threats. However, the ninth inning proved to be a different story as the Diamondbacks' bats finally woke up against Caleb Kilian.

With two outs and the bases empty, the comeback seemed improbable. But Adrian Del Castillo sparked the rally with a sharp RBI single to center field, scoring Ildemaro Vargas and cutting the deficit to 3-2. The tension escalated when Ryan Waldschmidt reached first base on a rare catcher’s interference call, putting the winning run on base. Sensing the danger, Giants manager Tony Vitello turned to left-handed reliever Matt Gage to face the dangerous Marte.

The move backfired instantly. On the second pitch he saw, Ketel Marte launched a towering fly ball over the left-field fence. Marte didn't even need to run immediately; he stood at home plate, tossed his bat toward the dugout, and watched the ball clear the wall for his sixth home run of the season. The three-run blast transformed a looming loss into a walk-off celebration.

Early Inning Chaos and Giants Power

The game began with plenty of drama even before the late-inning heroics. In the bottom of the first, Corbin Carroll scorched a triple into the left-center gap. In a bizarre sequence, the throw from Luis Arraez to third base bounced off Carroll’s head as he slid. Remarkably, Carroll scrambled to his feet and sprinted home to give Arizona an early 1-0 lead. Though he briefly retreated to the tunnel to be checked by trainers, the star outfielder remained in the game.

The Giants responded with authority in the top of the second inning. Rafael Devers and Willy Adames silenced the crowd with back-to-back solo home runs on consecutive pitches off Arizona starter Ryne Nelson. Daniel Susac added an RBI double later in the frame, pushing the Giants ahead 3-1—a lead they would hold until the final frame.

Pitching and Standings Impact

Despite the early stumble, Ryne Nelson provided the Diamondbacks with a much-needed quality start. Nelson settled in after the second inning, eventually completing seven frames while allowing only three earned runs. His stability allowed the Arizona bullpen to keep the game within reach, setting the stage for Marte’s heroics. On the other side, Landen Roupp was impressive for San Francisco, tossing six innings of one-run ball in a no-decision.

With this victory, the Diamondbacks (24-23) have climbed above the .500 mark for the first time since May 1. They now sit 5.5 games back in a competitive NL West race, while the Giants (20-28) continue to struggle to find consistency in their bullpen. Arizona will look to complete the three-game sweep on Wednesday.
