The San Diego Padres were down to their final out and their final strike on Sunday afternoon, but a newcomer to the roster and a franchise cornerstone combined to deliver one of the most electric finishes of the season at Petco Park. Nick Castellanos launched a game-tying two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning, and Manny Machado followed up with a walk-off sacrifice fly in the tenth to lead the San Diego Padres to a 3-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals.
The Ninth Inning Miracle: Nick Castellanos Delivers
For eight innings, the Padres' offense was largely dormant, struggling to find any rhythm against a disciplined Cardinals pitching staff. Entering the bottom of the ninth trailing 2-0, the situation looked bleak for the home crowd. St. Louis closer Riley O'Brien took the mound looking to secure the series win, but Xander Bogaerts jumpstarted the rally with a lead-off single.
O'Brien quickly regained his composure, striking out the next two batters to put the Padres on the brink of defeat. That brought up Nick Castellanos, who has quickly become a fan favorite in his first season with San Diego. Down 0-2 in the count, Castellanos showed veteran patience, working the count full over a grueling nine-pitch at-bat. On the final pitch, he connected with a 98 mph sinker, driving it deep into the left-center field seats to tie the game at 2-2.
The home run was only the second of the year for Castellanos, but its timing could not have been more perfect. It was a rare blown save for O'Brien, who has been stellar for the Cardinals this season but could not put away the persistent San Diego veteran in the high-pressure moment.
Machado Seals the Deal in Extra Innings
After Adrian Morejon (3-1) escaped the top of the tenth inning by retiring pinch-hitter José Fermín on just one pitch, the Padres went to work in the bottom half. With Ramón Laureano starting the inning as the automatic runner on second, the Cardinals' strategy was clear: limit the damage by any means necessary.
The Cardinals intentionally walked Jackson Merrill and unintentionally walked Fernando Tatis Jr., loading the bases for Manny Machado. With the infield drawn in and five men positioned to stop a ground ball, Machado stayed disciplined. He lofted a 299-foot fly ball to right field, deep enough to allow Laureano to tag up and slide headfirst into home plate ahead of a strong throw from Jordan Walker. The 3-2 victory secured a crucial series split for the Padres and sent the San Diego faithful home in a frenzy.
A Pitching Duel: Buehler vs. Leahy
While the late-inning heroics stole the headlines, the game began as a masterclass in pitching from both sides. Padres right-hander Walker Buehler turned in one of his best performances of the year, tossing six solid innings. Buehler retired the first 11 batters he faced before running into trouble in the fourth. He allowed only three hits and two runs while striking out two and walking none.
The only blemish on Buehler's line came courtesy of Jordan Walker. After Alec Burleson singled and stole second, Walker connected on a 1-2 knuckle-curve, sending it 425 feet into the third deck of the Western Metal Supply building for a two-run homer. It was Walker’s 11th home run of the season, continuing his breakout campaign.
On the other side, Cardinals starter Kyle Leahy was nearly untouchable. Leahy worked five scoreless innings, permitting just two hits. While he did struggle with his command at times—walking four batters—he managed to fan five and keep the Padres off the scoreboard throughout his outing, leaving the game with a lead that the St. Louis bullpen ultimately could not hold.
NL West Standings and What’s Next
The victory carries significant weight for the San Diego Padres beyond just the win column. By splitting the four-game series with St. Louis, San Diego has officially pulled into a tie with the rival Los Angeles Dodgers for the top spot in the National League West. The Padres (24-16) have shown remarkable resilience throughout the early part of the 2026 season, particularly in high-leverage situations.
The Cardinals (23-17) will look to bounce back as they continue their California road trip. They are scheduled to face the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday, with right-hander Andre Pallante (3-3, 4.34 ERA) taking the mound. Meanwhile, the Padres will stay home to host the Milwaukee Brewers, sending Matt Waldron (1-1, 7.71 ERA) to the hill in hopes of maintaining their momentum at the top of the division.
