Tigers Dominate Rays 8-0 as Torres, Pérez, and Greene Power Offensive Explosion

The Detroit Tigers delivered a resounding statement on Tuesday night, crushing the Tampa Bay Rays 8-0 at Tropicana Field behind a powerful offensive display and a stellar pitching performance from Jack Flaherty. Gleyber Torres marked his return from the injured list with a leadoff homer in his first MLB at-bat in about a month, setting the tone for Detroit's dominant victory.

Torres Makes Immediate Impact Upon Return

Torres worked a 3-1 count against Rays starter Steven Matz before crushing a sinker Statcast-projected 433 feet to left-center field for the fifth leadoff homer of his career. The All-Star's return from a left oblique strain provided an immediate lift for a Tigers lineup that struggled through May with a .204 team batting average. The second baseman's power display demonstrated he was fully healthy and ready to contribute to Detroit's playoff push.

Pérez and Greene Add to the Power Surge

The Tigers' offensive fireworks continued throughout the game. Spencer Torkelson hit a leadoff double in the second and Wenceel Pérez followed with a 404-foot shot over the left-field wall to make it 4-0. The two-run blast extended Detroit's early lead and put the Rays in a deep hole they would never escape.

Riley Greene capped the scoring with a leadoff homer in the seventh inning that made it 8-0. The outfield star continued his solid season performance, adding another long ball to his growing resume. Matt Vierling also contributed significantly, tripling, doubling and driving in two runs as the Tigers offense clicked on all cylinders.

Flaherty Earns First Win Since September

Jack Flaherty (1-7) struck out six in five-plus innings for his first win since last September. The right-hander gave up five hits and walked two after losing his previous five starts and six of the past seven. The victory was a crucial breakthrough for Flaherty, who had been struggling to find his form throughout the early part of the 2026 season.

Enmanuel De Jesus struck out four in four perfect innings for his first major league save, facing 11 batters and getting 12 outs, including a double play after replacing Flaherty in the sixth. The left-hander's dominant relief appearance sealed the shutout and gave the Tigers bullpen a much-needed confidence boost.

Tigers End Lengthy Road Series Drought

The victory held significant meaning for Detroit beyond just the final score. Detroit won back-to-back games for the first time since May 2 and 3, snapping a troubling stretch of inconsistent play. Detroit also won its first road series since taking two of three games at San Diego to begin the season, having gone nine road series in a row without winning one (0-8-1).

The Tigers, who hit five homers Monday to open the three-game set with a 10-9 victory, had lost eight consecutive series — their longest such streak since dropping nine straight in 2019. The back-to-back wins over Tampa Bay represented a potential turning point for a team desperate to build momentum.

Rays Struggle at the Plate

For Tampa Bay, the loss was a disappointing performance on home turf. Steven Matz (4-3) allowed five runs and six hits in 1 2/3 innings, getting knocked out early as the Tigers jumped on him from the opening pitch. The 35-year-old lefty became the fifth pitcher age 35 or older to appear for the Rays this season, tying the club record (2009).

Richie Palacios went 2 for 4 with a double and Ryan Vilade also doubled for Tampa Bay, but the Rays couldn't generate any sustained offense against Flaherty and the Tigers' bullpen. The shutout loss highlighted Tampa Bay's offensive struggles and raised questions about their ability to compete in a tight American League playoff race.

With the series already clinched, the Tigers will look to complete the sweep on Wednesday as they aim to build on their newfound momentum and climb back into contention in the American League standings.
