In one of the most chaotic and entertaining matches of the MLS season, Tai Baribo etched his name into the record books on Wednesday night. The D.C. United forward delivered a masterclass in finishing, netting a stunning Tai Baribo hat trick to rescue a point for the Black-and-Red in a wild 4-4 draw against the New York Red Bulls at Red Bull Arena.
Baribo’s Historic Night at Red Bull Arena
The headline of the night was undoubtedly the performance of Tai Baribo. By completing his hat trick in the 80th minute, Baribo became just the third player in MLS history to record at least three regular-season hat tricks since the start of the 2024 season, joining the elite company of Sam Surridge and Denis Bouanga. His clinical nature in front of goal was the only thing keeping D.C. United afloat in a match where their defense struggled to contain the Red Bulls' high-press attack.
Baribo’s first goal came in the 37th minute, providing a much-needed lifeline after D.C. fell behind early. Jackson Hopkins ignited the play with a blistering run to the endline before cutting a pass back to the penalty spot. Baribo, left completely unmarked, calmly slotted the ball home to reduce the deficit to 2-1. It was a sign of things to come for the Israeli international, who seemed to find space in the box at will throughout the evening.
A Back-and-Forth Battle in Harrison
The match began as a nightmare for the visitors. The New York Red Bulls jumped out to a commanding 2-0 lead within the first half-hour. Julian Hall opened the scoring after latching onto a pass from Ronald Donkor, beating the defense for a one-time finish. Just six minutes later, Donkor turned from provider to scorer, pouncing on a deflected pass in front of the net to double the lead. Even after Baribo’s first goal, the Red Bulls maintained a two-goal cushion heading into the latter stages of the game.
However, D.C. United refused to go away. In the 54th minute, João Peglow—who finished the night with two crucial assists—found Hopkins with a perfectly weighted through ball. Hopkins outpaced the New York backline and finished on the breakaway to make it 3-2. Just five minutes later, the Tai Baribo hat trick quest continued as he latched onto another Peglow pass, angling a shot inside the far post to level the score at 3-3.
Drama Until the Final Whistle
The scoring was far from over. New York’s Jorge Ruvalcaba appeared to have secured the win for the hosts with a brilliant second-half brace. His first goal was a spectacular individual effort, weaving to the corner of the six-yard box before firing into the roof of the net. His second, a long-range strike from the edge of the 18-yard box, put the Red Bulls ahead 4-3 and left D.C. United reeling once again.
But the night belonged to Baribo. In the 80th minute, Silvan Hefti whipped a dangerous cross into the box. Baribo showed incredible awareness, using his shoulder to redirect the ball past the goalkeeper and into the back of the net. The goal not only completed the Tai Baribo hat trick but also secured a hard-earned point on the road for a D.C. side that had trailed by two goals on multiple occasions.
D.C. United’s Resilience and Tactical Takeaways
While the four goals conceded will surely be a point of concern for head coach René Weiler, the offensive production from the trio of Baribo, Peglow, and Hopkins provides plenty of optimism. D.C. United (2-4-3) showed remarkable character to fight back in a hostile environment, while the New York Red Bulls (3-3-3) will rue their inability to protect leads of 2-0 and 3-1.
The draw keeps both teams in the thick of the Eastern Conference playoff race, but the momentum clearly sits with D.C. United's attack. As the season progresses, the chemistry between Peglow and Baribo is proving to be one of the most lethal combinations in the league. For the Red Bulls, the focus will shift to defensive stability after allowing a hat trick to a single player for the first time this campaign.
