The Charlotte Hornets have acquired two future second-round draft picks from the Orlando Magic in a trade finalized today, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic. The move continues a trend of aggressive asset accumulation for the Charlotte front office as they look toward future seasons.
With the addition of these two picks, the Hornets have significantly expanded their draft chest. The organization is now slated to receive a total of 11 first-round picks and 14 second-round picks over the next seven years. This brings their total draft capital to 25 picks through the end of the decade, providing the team with substantial leverage in future negotiations and roster building.
On the other side of the deal, the Orlando Magic utilized the transaction to address their financial standing. Per the report, the trade successfully moves the Magic out of the luxury tax. By shedding the necessary salary or cap hits associated with the deal, Orlando gains increased flexibility under the league’s collective bargaining agreement.
