The Sacramento Kings are signing former No. 7 overall pick Killian Hayes to a 10-day contract, according to sources at ESPN.
Hayes, a 23-year-old guard, joins the Kings roster as the team looks to evaluate talent and bolster backcourt depth. The French-American playmaker was originally selected by the Detroit Pistons with the seventh overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. He spent four seasons in Detroit, where he appeared in 210 games and made 145 starts before being waived in February.
During his tenure with the Pistons, Hayes averaged 8.1 points, 5.2 assists, and 2.9 rebounds per game. Known for his size at the point guard position and his defensive versatility, Hayes has struggled with shooting consistency throughout his professional career, averaging 38.2 percent from the field during his time in the Eastern Conference. This move allows the Sacramento Kings to take a low-risk look at a young player with high-lottery pedigree as they solidify their rotation for the late-season push.
Hayes will join a backcourt rotation currently led by All-Star De'Aaron Fox. If Hayes impresses during the 10-day window, the Kings will have the option to sign him to a second 10-day contract or a standard deal for the remainder of the season.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
