The Brooklyn Nets are signing guard Malachi Smith to a two-year contract, according to sources via ESPN. The deal provides Smith with a full standard roster spot after he impressed the organization during two consecutive 10-day contracts.
Smith, 26, has been a productive addition to the Nets rotation since his initial call-up in March. Over 10 games played on temporary deals, the 6-foot-4 guard averaged 7.3 points and 2.1 rebounds per contest. His most notable performance came on March 22 against the Sacramento Kings, where he scored a career-high 18 points.
Prior to making the jump to the NBA roster, Smith was a standout performer for the Long Island Nets, Brooklyn’s G League affiliate. His path from the G League to a multi-year NBA contract highlights the organization's focus on internal player development. The Gonzaga product went undrafted in 2023 and spent time with several G League teams before finding a permanent home in Brooklyn.
The signing solidifies the Nets' backcourt depth as they move through the final stretch of the regular season. Per NBA rules, a team must sign a player to a standard contract to retain them after two 10-day contracts have expired.
