Phoenix Suns and Mercury owner Mat Ishbia has confirmed a contract extension for CEO Josh Bartelstein, according to reports from Shams Charania and ESPN. The move solidifies the leadership structure for both franchises as they continue to evolve under Ishbia’s ownership.
Bartelstein was the first executive hire made by Ishbia after he officially took control of the Phoenix franchises in February 2023. Since then, Bartelstein has served as a primary advisor and partner to Ishbia, overseeing both the basketball and business operations for the Suns and the WNBA's Mercury.
“From day one, I knew Josh was the right person to help build the culture and organization that I envisioned in Phoenix — on and off the court,” Ishbia told ESPN. “He is my trusted partner in every aspect.”
During his tenure, Bartelstein has been involved in several major organizational shifts, including significant roster changes and the transition of the teams' broadcasting to a local over-the-air model. This extension ensures that Bartelstein will remain at the helm of the organization's day-to-day operations for the foreseeable future as Ishbia continues his aggressive approach to team building.
