This update is a brief. We are expanding coverage with additional context and analysis as more details become available.

Free agent guard Marcus Smart has reached an agreement on a two-year, $13 million contract with the Houston Rockets, per Chris Haynes of Bleacher Report and TNT.

The veteran guard joins a Rockets squad that has been active in veteran acquisitions over the last two offseasons. Smart, who is widely regarded as one of the premier perimeter defenders in the NBA, is a former Defensive Player of the Year winner and a multi-time All-Defensive First Team selection. His arrival in Houston is expected to provide significant defensive toughness and veteran leadership to a backcourt featuring young talents like Jalen Green and Amen Thompson.

Prior to this agreement, Smart spent the bulk of his career with the Boston Celtics, where he became a fan favorite and a core piece of several deep playoff runs. He was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies during the 2023 offseason but dealt with injuries that limited his availability throughout the most recent campaign. Now healthy, he moves to the Western Conference to join head coach Ime Udoka’s rotation in Houston, reuniting with his former coach from his time in Boston.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
