The San Francisco 49ers have reached an agreement to sign former Cincinnati Bengals defensive lineman Cameron Sample to a one-year contract, per @AdamSchefter of ESPN.
Sample, 24, enters the 49ers defensive rotation after spending the first three seasons of his career in Cincinnati. Originally a fourth-round selection out of Tulane in the 2021 NFL Draft, the edge rusher has appeared in 47 career regular-season games. During his tenure with the Bengals, he recorded 68 total tackles, 5.0 sacks, and 20 quarterback hits while serving as a consistent rotational piece on a unit that reached Super Bowl LVI.
The move provides the San Francisco front with additional depth as they look to bolster their pass rush for the upcoming season. Sample is looking to make a comeback after missing the entire 2024 season due to a torn Achilles suffered during training camp last August. Before the injury, he was highly regarded for his versatility and high motor, traits that align with the 49ers' defensive philosophy under coordinator Nick Sorensen.
Standing 6-foot-3 and weighing 272 pounds, Sample was the Defensive MVP of the 2021 Senior Bowl. This "prove-it" deal allows the 49ers to evaluate his health and fit within their system while giving the veteran defender a chance to re-enter the market next offseason.
