The Supreme Court on Tuesday declined to intervene in the ongoing racial discrimination lawsuit filed by former Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores against the NFL, per @AdamSchefter. The decision paves the way for the case to proceed toward a trial in open court rather than being forced into private arbitration.
Flores initiated the legal action in early 2022, alleging discriminatory practices regarding the league's hiring and firing of Black coaches and front-office executives. The NFL had petitioned the high court to step in after lower courts ruled that significant portions of the lawsuit could be heard in a public courtroom. The Supreme Court's refusal to hear the appeal represents a significant procedural victory for Flores and fellow plaintiffs Steve Wilks and Ray Horton.
The case will now move forward with the discovery phase, which may involve the disclosure of internal league communications and testimony from high-ranking NFL officials. Flores, who currently serves as the defensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings, has maintained that his goal is to create lasting change within the league's coaching ranks through this litigation.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
