The Cleveland Browns have officially informed defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz that the organization is hiring Todd Monken as their next head coach, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.
The decision was delivered to Schwartz on Wednesday morning. Per sources cited by The Insiders, Schwartz was visibly upset by the news and has already begun saying his goodbyes to staff members inside the building. Despite currently being under contract with the team, Schwartz reportedly told other coaches that he does not plan on returning to the organization following the hire.
Monken now takes the reins in Cleveland, while the future of the team's defensive leadership remains in flux. Schwartz, who was considered a top internal candidate for the vacancy, led one of the NFL's premier defensive units last season. His anticipated departure marks a significant shift for the Browns coaching staff as they transition to Monken's leadership.
