The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have officially signed running back Kenneth Gainwell, according to a report from Adam Schefter. The transaction adds a veteran presence to the Bucs' backfield as the team continues its offseason roster evaluations.
Gainwell joins the Buccaneers after spending the first three seasons of his career with the Philadelphia Eagles. While the initial report identified him as a former Steeler, Gainwell was actually a fifth-round selection by Philadelphia in the 2021 NFL Draft out of the University of Memphis. He appeared in 49 regular-season games for the Eagles, establishing himself as a consistent contributor in both the running and passing games.
Over his three-year tenure in the NFL, Gainwell has accumulated 1,107 rushing yards and 11 rushing touchdowns on 254 carries. He has also proven productive as a receiver, tallying 89 career receptions for 605 yards and one touchdown. His collegiate career at Memphis was highlighted by a 2019 season in which he recorded over 2,000 yards from scrimmage before opting out of the 2020 season.
The Buccaneers have not yet announced the specific terms or the length of the contract. Gainwell enters a depth chart that includes Rachaad White and 2024 draft pick Bucky Irving. This signing marks the latest move by the Tampa Bay front office to solidify the offensive unit heading into training camp.
