The Dallas Cowboys are leaning toward using the franchise tag on wide receiver George Pickens, team COO Stephen Jones confirmed to reporters on Monday. The move would ensure the star playmaker remains in Dallas for the 2026 season as the organization continues to work toward a long-term contract extension.
“Of course, leaning toward the franchise tag,” Jones said regarding the ongoing negotiations. “We want Pickens here. We think the world of him. Want him here. Love him, and I think he wants to be here. So all that's a plus.”
Pickens, who joined the Cowboys via trade from the Pittsburgh Steelers prior to the 2025 season, is coming off a breakout campaign where he emerged as a primary target alongside CeeDee Lamb. In his first year with Dallas, Pickens recorded career-highs in receptions (93), receiving yards (1,429), and touchdowns (9), earning second-team All-Pro honors. Utilizing the tag, which is projected to cost approximately $28.8 million, allows the front office to secure his rights through the upcoming season while avoiding the risk of him hitting the open market as an unrestricted free agent.
The Cowboys have until the March 3 deadline to officially finalize the franchise designation. With Lamb already under a long-term deal, retaining Pickens remains a top priority for the Dallas offense heading into the new league year.
