NFL insider Ian Rapoport is officially set to join ESPN following the completion of the network's acquisition of NFL Network and other league media assets, according to @RapSheet.
The move comes as ESPN finalized its takeover of NFL Media operations this week, a landmark deal that saw the NFL acquire a 10 percent equity stake in the sports media giant. Despite previous reports that his contract was set to expire in May, Rapoport will remain a central figure in the newly integrated media landscape, potentially teaming up with fellow insider Adam Schefter.
Rapoport, who has served as the lead insider for NFL Network since 2013, expressed excitement regarding the transition, previously comparing the prospect of the combined reporting teams to "The Avengers." The acquisition includes NFL Network, NFL RedZone, and NFL Fantasy, which are being integrated into ESPN's digital and broadcast ecosystem.
Reports from Front Office Sports and The Athletic indicate that ESPN leadership views Rapoport and draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah as key components of their long-term strategy. The merger marks a significant shift in sports media, as ESPN assumes control of the league's primary media properties while the NFL gains a direct ownership stake in the network.
