Green Bay Packers linebacker Quay Walker is expected to hit the open market this coming Monday after the team was unable to reach a contract extension with the former first-round pick, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.
The Packers reportedly made several aggressive runs at re-signing Walker before finalizing their recent trade for linebacker Zaire Franklin. Despite the team's interest in retaining his services, Walker is now slated to test free agency, where he is expected to command a "strong market" from linebacker-needy teams across the league.
Walker was a first-round selection by Green Bay in the 2022 NFL Draft out of Georgia. Since entering the league, he has been a consistent presence in the Packers' defensive unit. However, the acquisition of Franklin appears to have signaled a shift in the team's defensive plans, leading to the impasse in contract negotiations with the incumbent starter.
