The Seattle Seahawks are hiring Mike Macdonald as their next head coach, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Macdonald, 36, becomes the youngest head coach in the NFL, taking over the vacancy left by Pete Carroll earlier this month.
Macdonald spent the last two seasons as the defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens. Under his leadership, the Ravens defense made NFL history in 2023 by becoming the first unit to lead the league in scoring defense, sacks, and takeaways in the same season. His arrival in Seattle marks a significant cultural shift for the franchise, which had been led by Carroll for the past 14 seasons.
The deal between the Seahawks and Macdonald is reportedly a six-year contract, per Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport. Macdonald was a highly sought-after candidate during this coaching cycle, also drawing interest from the Washington Commanders before ultimately reaching an agreement with Seattle. He is expected to begin assembling his coaching staff immediately as the team looks to improve upon their 9-8 finish from the 2023 campaign.
