Free agent quarterback Kirk Cousins is signing a five-year, $172 million contract with the Las Vegas Raiders, per Adam Schefter of ESPN. The blockbuster move provides the veteran signal-caller with a new home while giving the Raiders a high-profile addition to their depth chart.
The financial structure of the deal is unique. While the total value is listed at $172 million, the contract functions in reality as a one-year, fully-guaranteed $20 million deal for the current season. Additionally, the agreement contains a club option for two years at $80 million, allowing the Raiders significant flexibility regarding the long-term future of the position.
According to Schefter, the Atlanta Falcons remain financially involved in the transition, paying Cousins $8.7 million this season. The Raiders will be responsible for the remainder of the guaranteed salary. Cousins, a veteran with extensive starting experience, now moves to the AFC West to lead a Las Vegas offense looking to compete in a high-powered division.
