The New Jersey Devils have officially fired General Manager Tom Fitzgerald, the team announced on Monday. The decision to part ways with the executive comes while Fitzgerald still had one year remaining on his contract for the upcoming season, according to Pierre LeBrun.

Fitzgerald originally joined the Devils front office in 2015 as an assistant general manager. He was elevated to the role of interim general manager in January 2020 following the departure of Ray Shero and was subsequently named the permanent executive vice president and general manager in July 2020. During his tenure, Fitzgerald was responsible for navigating the franchise through a significant rebuilding period, including the acquisition of key roster pillars and high-level draft selections.

Despite the term remaining on his deal, the organization has opted to change leadership within the hockey operations department effective immediately. Per @PierreVLeBrun, the move marks a major shift for the franchise as they look toward the future. The team has not yet named a replacement or an interim successor to handle the upcoming offseason duties.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
