Longtime NHL goaltender and legendary broadcaster John Garrett has passed away, according to a tribute shared by TSN’s Darren Dreger. Garrett, affectionately known throughout the hockey world as "Cheech," was a beloved figure in the sport for over five decades.
Writing on social media, Darren Dreger paid personal tribute to Garrett, highlighting his thoughtfulness and sense of humor. Garrett was a staple of the hockey community, transitioning from a professional playing career in the WHA and NHL into a celebrated tenure in the broadcast booth. He was most recently known for his long-running role as a color commentator for Vancouver Canucks broadcasts on Sportsnet, where he became a fan favorite for his insightful analysis and personality.
During his playing days, Garrett suited up for several franchises, including the Hartford Whalers, Quebec Nordiques, and the Vancouver Canucks. He also spent significant time in the WHA with the Minnesota Fighting Saints and Birmingham Bulls. Garrett was an NHL All-Star in 1983 and remained one of the most recognizable voices in Canadian sports broadcasting following his retirement from the ice in 1985.
The hockey world has begun mourning the loss of a man who was as well-regarded for his kindness off the ice as he was for his contributions to the game on it. No official cause of death has been released at this time.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
