Longtime Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews is expected to officially announce his retirement from the NHL tomorrow, according to Darren Dreger of TSN.
The announcement is reportedly set to take place "hand in hand" with the Winnipeg Jets. While Toews spent his entire 15-season professional career in Chicago, he is a native of Winnipeg. The specific details regarding his involvement with the Jets organization for the announcement have not yet been disclosed.
Toews, 36, finishes his career as one of the most decorated players in hockey history. He led the Blackhawks to three Stanley Cup championships in 2010, 2013, and 2015, and was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as the postseason MVP in 2010. Over 1,067 regular-season games, he tallied 372 goals and 511 assists for 883 points.
The veteran center did not play during the 2023-24 season while focusing on his health. Toews has been public about his struggles with symptoms of long COVID and chronic immune response syndrome, which limited his availability during his final seasons in Chicago. His last NHL game was on April 13, 2023, a night in which he scored a goal in his final appearance for the Blackhawks.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
