The Buffalo Sabres have acquired forward David Kampf and a 2027 third-round draft pick from the Washington Capitals in exchange for winger Alex Tuch, according to @FriedgeHNIC.
The draft pick return, as understood by Elliotte Friedman, is originally the San Jose Sharks' 2027 third-round selection. The transaction follows the confirmation that Alex Tuch has agreed to a massive eight-year, $84 million contract extension with the Capitals. The extension carries an average annual value (AAV) of $10.5 million.
Tuch, 30, was entering the final year of his contract and was widely expected to be a top target in free agency on July 1. By facilitating the sign-and-trade, the Sabres receive a veteran depth center in David Kampf and future draft capital rather than losing the star winger for nothing. Kampf, 31, joins a Buffalo roster that has been aggressively retooled this week, including the recent acquisition of the No. 4 overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft.
The move marks the second major addition for Washington in as many days, following their trade for Jordan Kyrou. The Capitals are clearly positioning themselves as aggressive contenders heading into the draft weekend in Buffalo.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
