The Utah Hockey Club has traded the No. 23 overall selection in the 2026 NHL Draft to the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for goaltender Sebastian Cossa, according to Pierre LeBrun of TSN.
The deal, struck during the opening round of the draft, provides Utah with a highly touted young netminder as they continue to solidify their roster heading into their third season of play. Sebastian Cossa, now 23 years old, was originally selected by the Red Wings with the 15th overall pick in the 2021 NHL Draft. Standing 6-foot-6, the goaltender has been a focal point of Detroit's development system, recently making significant strides at the professional level with the Grand Rapids Griffins and earning starts at the NHL level.
For the Detroit Red Wings, the move grants them an additional first-round asset in a draft class considered deep by many scouts. General Manager Steve Yzerman adds the 23rd overall pick to his cupboard, allowing the team to further bolster their prospect pool with high-end talent. Utah, meanwhile, addresses a long-term need in goal by acquiring a player who has long been regarded as one of the top goaltending prospects in hockey.
The trade marks one of the first major splashes of the draft night, as Utah continues to be aggressive in building out their core following their successful transition to the league in 2024. Sebastian Cossa is expected to compete for a primary role in the Utah crease immediately as the team looks to make a push in the Western Conference.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
