The New York Islanders looked like a team ready for the bus ride home midway through the second period on Tuesday night. Trailing 3-0 against a surging St. Louis Blues squad and facing a goaltender in Joel Hofer who seemed unbeatable, the odds of a comeback were microscopic. However, led by star forward Mathew Barzal and a massive shift in momentum, the Islanders orchestrated a stunning 4-3 overtime victory at the Enterprise Center.
Barzal, who finished the night with three points, capped the rally by scoring at 2:11 of the extra period. The win not only showcased the Islanders' resilience but also served as a critical momentum builder as the team pushes for playoff positioning in the final stretch of the season.
The Turning Point: An Offside Call and a Costly Penalty
For the first 30 minutes of the game, the New York Islanders vs. St. Louis Blues matchup was entirely one-sided. The Blues jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first period behind a tip-in goal from Philip Broberg. The lead swelled in the second period when Dylan Holloway and Jimmy Snuggerud scored just 87 seconds apart, putting St. Louis ahead 3-0.
The game appeared to reach a breaking point when Robert Thomas seemingly scored to make it 4-0 with just over five minutes remaining in the second period. However, Islanders head coach Patrick Roy issued a challenge for offside. Upon review, the goal was overturned, providing the Islanders with the life preserver they desperately needed. Shortly after the successful challenge, Jean-Gabriel Pageau got New York on the board with 2:10 left in the frame, cutting the deficit to 3-1 and setting the stage for a dramatic third period.
Special Teams Spark the Third Period Surge
The momentum fully swung in New York's favor early in the third period when Blues forward Pavel Buchnevich was assessed a double-minor penalty for high-sticking Calum Ritchie. With four minutes of power-play time to work with, the Islanders' special teams unit went to work.
Ritchie himself found the back of the net at the 5:52 mark of the third, capitalizing on the man advantage to bring the Islanders within one. Exactly one minute later, Bo Horvat fired a snap shot past Hofer to tie the game at 3-3. In a span of just 60 seconds, the Islanders had erased a multi-goal lead, largely thanks to the playmaking of Barzal, who recorded assists on both the Pageau and Horvat goals.
Despite the offensive explosion from New York, Blues goaltender Joel Hofer remained a wall for much of the night, finishing with a career-high 45 saves. On the other end, Ilya Sorokin remained calm under pressure, stopping 20 of the 23 shots he faced to keep the Islanders in contention.
Mathew Barzal Seals the Deal in Overtime
After a scoreless conclusion to regulation, the game moved to 3-on-3 overtime. The Islanders continued to dictate the pace, as they had for the majority of the second half of the game. At 2:11 of the extra period, Barzal took matters into his own hands, navigating the open ice and beating Hofer to secure the second point for New York.
"We just needed one to go in to believe," Barzal said following the game. "That offside challenge was huge for us. It gave us a second life, and we knew if we could get the power play going, we had a chance."
An Emotional Return for Brayden Schenn
While the comeback was the primary story on the ice, the atmosphere in the arena was shaped by the return of Brayden Schenn. Schenn, who was the captain of the Blues for the last three seasons and a staple in St. Louis for nine years, was traded to the Islanders just days ago at the trade deadline. During the first period, the Blues played a video tribute to their former leader, resulting in a long and emotional standing ovation from the St. Louis faithful.
Schenn contributed to the winning effort with an assist on Barzal's overtime goal, making his return to his former home even more memorable. For the Blues, the loss snapped a season-high four-game winning streak. Despite the defeat, young forward Jimmy Snuggerud continued his hot streak, recording a goal and two assists to give him 17 points in his last 13 games. Additionally, Blues defenseman Theo Lindstein recorded an assist in his NHL debut.
The Islanders will look to carry this momentum home as they host the Los Angeles Kings on Friday, while the Blues must regroup as they fight to stay in the Western Conference playoff hunt.
