The Philadelphia Eagles are reuniting with a key piece of their secondary, re-signing veteran cornerback Avonte Maddox to a one-year contract, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Maddox, 27, was released by the franchise on March 7 in a move designed to create salary cap flexibility. Despite testing the open market and drawing interest from other clubs during free agency, the veteran slot defender has opted to return to the team that drafted him in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft.

When healthy, Maddox has proven to be one of the most effective nickel cornerbacks in the NFL. However, his 2023 campaign was largely derailed by a torn pectoral muscle that limited him to just four regular-season appearances. His return provides much-needed stability and veteran continuity to a defensive backfield that is currently being overhauled under new defensive coordinator Vic Fangio.

Over his six seasons in Philadelphia, Maddox has appeared in 64 games, recording 250 tackles, four interceptions, and 31 passes defended. He remains a core member of the Eagles' locker room and a versatile asset for the defensive rotation.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
