Leonhard joined the Denver Broncos coaching staff last season following a highly successful tenure at the University of Wisconsin. During his time with the Badgers, Leonhard served as the defensive coordinator from 2017 to 2022 and briefly took over as the program's interim head coach. Under his leadership, Wisconsin consistently fielded one of the most statistically dominant defenses in college football.
The move would represent a return to Western New York for Leonhard, who played safety for the Buffalo Bills during the 2013 season as part of his 10-year NFL playing career. The Bills are looking to formalize their defensive leadership structure after head coach Sean McDermott handled defensive play-calling duties throughout the 2023 season following the departure of Leslie Frazier.
