Minnesota Vikings rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy is expected to miss the entire 2024 NFL season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
The surgery, which took place on Wednesday morning, revealed that a full meniscus repair was required. While a partial meniscectomy might have allowed for a shorter recovery time, the full repair ensures the long-term health of the young signal-caller but necessitates a multi-month rehabilitation process that will sideline him for his rookie campaign.
McCarthy, the No. 10 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft out of Michigan, made his preseason debut last Saturday against the Las Vegas Raiders. He finished that performance with 188 passing yards and two touchdowns. However, the rookie reported soreness in his knee on Monday, leading to an MRI that discovered the tear. With McCarthy officially sidelined, veteran Sam Darnold is positioned to lead the Vikings' offense for the 2024 season.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
