Former Houston Texans wide receiver John Metchie III is signing a one-year contract with the Carolina Panthers, per @WinSportsGroup.
Metchie joins the Panthers after spending the start of his professional career with the Texans organization. Selected in the second round (44th overall) of the 2022 NFL Draft out of the University of Alabama, Metchie has appeared in 16 career regular-season games. During the 2023 season, he recorded 16 receptions for 158 yards, averaging 9.9 yards per catch. He also appeared in both of Houston's postseason contests following the 2023 campaign.
The wideout’s NFL career began with a significant health battle. Metchie missed the entirety of his 2022 rookie season after being diagnosed with Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia in July 2022. After successful treatment, he was cleared to return to football activities in 2023 and was subsequently named the winner of the 2023 PFWA George Halas Award, recognizing his comeback from adversity.
In Carolina, Metchie joins a wide receiver depth chart that includes Adam Thielen, Diontae Johnson, Jonathan Mingo, and 2024 first-round pick Xavier Legette. The move reunites Metchie with Panthers quarterback Bryce Young. The two were teammates at Alabama in 2021, a season in which Metchie tallied 96 receptions for 1,142 yards and eight touchdowns before entering the draft.
