Free agent safety Kevin Byard has reached an agreement to join the New England Patriots, choosing the franchise over interest from the Chicago Bears, according to Josina Anderson. Tom Pelissero of NFL Network was first to report the deal.
In a direct conversation with Anderson, Byard confirmed that his decision came down to the two teams, but his existing relationship with Mike Vrabel tipped the scales in favor of New England. Vrabel, who coached Byard for several seasons with the Tennessee Titans, recently joined the Patriots staff. "It was either #Bears or the #Patriots, and you know I have relationship with Coach Vrabes; and New England it is," Byard told Anderson.
Byard is a significant addition to the Patriots secondary. The veteran safety is a two-time Pro Bowler and two-time First-team All-Pro selection. After spending the majority of his career as a cornerstone for the Titans, he was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles during the 2023 season. His veteran presence is expected to provide stability to the back end of the Patriots defense under the team's new leadership.
The Bears were reportedly aggressive in their pursuit of the veteran, but the lure of reuniting with Vrabel in Foxborough proved too strong. Details regarding the length and financial terms of the contract have not yet been made public.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
