The Pittsburgh Steelers are working toward a deal to hire former Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy as their next head coach, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.
McCarthy, a Pittsburgh native, returns to his hometown to lead one of the NFL's most storied organizations. The move follows the recent resignation of Mike Tomlin, who stepped down after 19 seasons. McCarthy will become just the fourth head coach to lead the Steelers since 1969.
According to Pelissero, McCarthy has been one of the NFL’s most successful coaches over the past two decades, winning over 60% of his games with 12 playoff trips in 18 seasons with the Packers and Cowboys. After a year away from the league in 2025, he is now set to coach another one of the most iconic franchises in football.
The 62-year-old McCarthy brings a Super Bowl-winning pedigree to the Steelers, having previously won a championship with Green Bay. He reportedly turned down inquiries from other teams to focus on the Pittsburgh vacancy, completing a homecoming for the coach who grew up in the city's Greenfield neighborhood.
