The Pittsburgh Steelers are working towards a deal to hire Mike McCarthy as the organization's next head coach, per @TomPelissero.
The hiring marks a significant homecoming for McCarthy, 62, who is a Pittsburgh native and grew up rooting for the team he is now set to lead. McCarthy brings a wealth of experience and a championship resume to the franchise, having spent 18 seasons as a head coach with the Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys. He famously led the Packers to a victory in Super Bowl XLV—a win that coincidentally came against the Steelers in 2011.
McCarthy will take over for Mike Tomlin, who led the team for 19 seasons. The Steelers, known for their coaching stability, are hiring just their fourth head coach since 1969. McCarthy enters the role with a career regular-season record of 174-112-2. According to NFL Network, McCarthy was chosen after a search that included interviews with several finalists, including Brian Flores and Anthony Weaver.
The deal is expected to be finalized shortly as the Steelers look to stabilize their leadership ahead of the 2026 season. McCarthy did not coach during the 2025 season following his departure from the Dallas Cowboys.
