Five-time Pro Bowl cornerback Stephon Gilmore announced his retirement from the NFL on Wednesday via a post on his Instagram account, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.
Gilmore, 35, concludes a decorated 13-year career that established him as one of the premier defensive backs of his generation. The veteran cornerback was named the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2019 and won Super Bowl LIII as a member of the New England Patriots. Over the course of his career, he earned five Pro Bowl selections and two First-team All-Pro honors in 2018 and 2019.
Originally selected with the 10th overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills, Gilmore played for several franchises during his tenure, including the Carolina Panthers, Indianapolis Colts, and Dallas Cowboys. During his final season in 2023 with Dallas, he remained a high-level contributor, starting all 17 games while recording two interceptions and 13 passes defended.
Known for his elite "shutdown" capabilities in man-to-man coverage, Gilmore finishes his professional career with 31 career interceptions and 140 passes defended. His announcement marks the end of an era for one of the most technically sound defensive players of the last decade.
