The Minnesota Vikings are hiring Ryan Nielsen to serve as the team’s new Defensive Run Game Coordinator, according to a report from Adam Schefter of ESPN. Nielsen joins the Vikings coaching staff after most recently serving as a Senior Defensive Assistant for the Buffalo Bills.
Nielsen brings significant veteran experience and a defensive coordinator pedigree to Minnesota. He spent the 2024 season as the defensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars and held the same title with the Atlanta Falcons in 2023. Prior to his coordinator roles, Nielsen established himself as a premier defensive line specialist during a six-year tenure with the New Orleans Saints (2017–2022), eventually rising to the rank of co-defensive coordinator.
In his new role, Nielsen is expected to work closely with Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores to bolster the team's front seven. The addition marks a significant move for head coach Kevin O'Connell as the Vikings look to refine their defensive unit following the 2025 season. Nielsen has earned a reputation across the league for his ability to develop interior defensive talent and implement disciplined run-stopping schemes.
