Washington Commanders linebacker Bobby Wagner has been named the 2026 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year, according to @TomPelissero. The award, widely considered the league's most prestigious honor, recognizes a player's outstanding community service activities off the field as well as excellence on the field.
The announcement was made Thursday night during the annual "NFL Honors" ceremony. Wagner was selected for his dedicated philanthropic work through his FAST54 Phenia Mae Fund, which focuses on stroke education and support for patients. The fund was established in memory of his late mother, Phenia Mae Wagner.
A 14-year veteran and 10-time Pro Bowler, Wagner has been nominated for the award four times previously in his career. He is the first member of the Washington Commanders franchise to win the honor since Darrell Green in 1996. As the winner, Wagner will receive a $250,000 donation to the charity of his choice, provided by the NFL Foundation and Nationwide.
On the field, Wagner remains one of the most productive defenders in NFL history, having recorded over 100 tackles in every single season of his professional career. His consistent excellence and leadership have made him a pillar of the league both in the locker room and the community.
