John Harbaugh Optimistic Dexter Lawrence II Remains with Giants Despite Workout Absence

The John Harbaugh era for the New York Giants officially moved onto the field this week, but the team’s most dominant defensive force was notably missing from the huddle. As the Giants kicked off their first voluntary offseason workouts on Tuesday, All-Pro defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence II was a no-show, fueling ongoing speculation regarding his future with the franchise.

Harbaugh Maintains Positive Outlook Amid Trade Request

Despite the absence of his star defender, head coach John Harbaugh struck a hopeful tone during a Zoom call with reporters on Tuesday. Lawrence’s decision to skip the start of the offseason program follows reports that the veteran nose tackle has requested a trade after contract negotiations hit a standstill. However, Harbaugh remains confident that the two sides can find common ground before the 2026 season begins.

“We’ll find out. I think the prospects are going to be high,” Harbaugh said when asked about the likelihood of Lawrence returning to the fold. “Speaking for the Giants, we want Dexter here. And I believe Dexter wants to be here. There is obviously a business side to this, but he is a vital part of what we are building.”

The "Middle Stone" of the Giants Defense

Harbaugh, who was hired in January to revitalize a Giants team coming off a disappointing 4-13 campaign, has been vocal about Lawrence’s importance since arriving in East Rutherford. During the call, he reiterated that Dexter Lawrence II is the literal and figurative center of the team's defensive identity.

“How important is he? Really important,” Harbaugh noted. “He’s a cornerstone football player—not really a cornerstone, more like the middle stone. He’s right in the middle. He’s a very big stone, and he’s a very active, athletic one.”

Contract Friction and Production Trends

The current impasse stems from Lawrence’s desire for a contract adjustment. Although he signed a four-year, $90 million extension in 2023, the market for elite interior defenders has shifted significantly. Lawrence is currently scheduled to earn $20 million this season and $19.5 million in 2027. Reports suggest that Lawrence’s camp has been attempting to negotiate a deal that reflects his value over the last three seasons, but progress has been slow.

The negotiations are complicated by a dip in Lawrence's statistical output last year. While he started all 17 games in 2025, he was hampered by a lingering elbow injury sustained late in 2024. He finished the season with:

  • 31 total tackles (a career low)
  • 0.5 sacks
  • 8 quarterback hits

Despite the down year in the box score, Lawrence remains one of the most double-teamed players in the NFL, and his presence is critical for defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson’s new scheme.

What’s Next for Big Blue?

As the New York Giants continue their spring program, all eyes will remain on the facility’s entrance to see if Lawrence ends his holdout. With the fifth overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft and a new coaching staff in place, the Giants are in the midst of a total culture shift. Keeping a three-time Pro Bowler like Lawrence happy will be a major test for Harbaugh and general manager Joe Schoen as they look to climb out of the NFC East basement.
