The Buffalo Bills are continuing to reshape their coaching staff under new head coach Joe Brady, reaching agreements to hire John Egorugwu and Jay Valai for key defensive roles, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
John Egorugwu is set to return to Orchard Park as the team's inside linebackers coach. Egorugwu previously spent four seasons with the Bills from 2017 to 2020, rising from defensive quality control coach to assistant linebackers coach. He spent the last several seasons with the New York Giants under Brian Daboll before the team's recent coaching changes.
Joining him on the defensive side is Jay Valai, who will serve as the Bills' cornerbacks coach. Valai makes the jump to the NFL after a successful tenure as the assistant head coach and co-defensive coordinator at the University of Oklahoma. Under his guidance, the Sooners' secondary became one of the most productive units in college football, ranking near the top of the nation in interceptions over the past few seasons.
These hires represent a significant investment in the defensive vision of Joe Brady and newly appointed defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard. The moves follow the recent addition of Bobby April III as outside linebackers coach, as the Bills look to maintain their status as a defensive powerhouse in the AFC following the departure of Sean McDermott.
