The Chicago Blackhawks have reached an agreement with veteran defenseman Ian Cole on a one-year contract, according to Pierre LeBrun of TSN and The Athletic.
The deal features a $4 million base salary for the upcoming season. Additionally, the contract includes $750,000 in potential performance-based bonuses, bringing the total maximum value of the signing to $4.75 million, per @PierreVLeBrun.
Ian Cole, a two-time Stanley Cup champion, brings significant veteran experience to the Chicago blue line. The 35-year-old defenseman has spent over a decade in the NHL, most recently appearing in 78 games for the Vancouver Canucks during the 2023-24 campaign. Known for his shot-blocking and defensive reliability, Cole has previously suited up for the Tampa Bay Lightning, Carolina Hurricanes, and Colorado Avalanche among others.
The move provides the Blackhawks with a proven defensive presence as they continue to reshape their roster around a young core. The one-year term allows Chicago to maintain future cap flexibility while adding leadership to their locker room for the 2024-25 season.
