The New Jersey Devils have traded goaltender Jacob Markstrom to the Florida Panthers in exchange for forward Evan Rodrigues, according to Pierre LeBrun of TSN and The Athletic.
Per the report, the Devils did not retain any salary in the transaction. Markstrom is set to begin a two-year contract extension starting next season, which carries an average annual value (AAV) of $6 million. While the swap of Markstrom and Rodrigues serves as the centerpiece of the deal, LeBrun noted there are other "small parts" involved in the trade that have yet to be fully disclosed.
The move provides the Panthers with a high-caliber veteran presence in net, while the Devils acquire Rodrigues, a versatile forward coming off a championship run. By not retaining salary, the Devils successfully move the entirety of Markstrom's upcoming $12 million commitment off their books.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
